Fetal monitor, electronic (fe"t*l). Electronic fetal monitor, or EFM, is an apparatus for observing and recording the heart rate of a fetus and for keeping track of the frequency, length, and strength of the mother's uterine contractions.
Members of the medical community who use EFM every day to assess the well-being of fetuses during labor, say that EFM is a viable and effective tool in reducing the risk of cerebral palsy.
